10, 20 and 30 years on. PDF Print

This week has been full of memories spread over the last 30 years.

So 30 years ago, in Sept 1981 I had left school that summer and had started work at what is now known as BT, What brought back memories was that I recently went to a year of 1981 school reunion, Not the type that you see in the Cinema but a good old fashioned drink, Judging by some of the Facebook comments after, some may have drunk a tiny bit too much, But hey that's what makes these things fun. This brought back many memories from school including the feeling of impending terror as we heard the clicking of Mrs Alcocks heels heading towards us. But also the good times, School trips, Bunking off and Under-age drinking in the very same pub that We met in for the reunion.. It was really strange and really great to see people Ive not seen in 30 years, and in many cases see how little people have changed.

I will now step forward 10 years to September 1991, I had now left BT which by now had gone through many changes, and was now cycling across Nepal, My Bike in Nepal Travelling across SE Asia by as many different means as possible, including a Smuggling Boat from Singapore to Sumatra before finally arriving in New Zealand. This was a great and in many ways a care free time for me, Cycling where I wanted when I wanted.

Moving forward to 2001 I was now married and We didn't know it but the World was about to change. The week started as normal, I was in Ipswich at NTL's Network Operations Centre training staff. The 11th started as normal The mornings training had gone well, but then just before 2pm there call from the NOC, We rushed in to see the feed from Sky on the screen and people standing transfixed, staring at a burning tower on the screen, We continued to stand transfixed as the second plane hit. The day continued in a surreal manner as companies called in asking why they could get though to their US offices. In many cases this was just congestion because the lines were busy but in some cases this was for what was by now a far more obvious and chilling reason.

That was 10 years ago and it heralded a change in the world order, and its fair to say not for the better, We are in a recession again as it was when I left school in 1981, War unrest and intolerance abound as it did in Kosovo and the Gulf in the early 1990's.

So what has those 30 years brought us for the better, Well the one massive thing has been the growth of the Internet and communications, This has allowed people to get and keep in touch in a way they never would have been able to back in 1981 or even for that matter in 1991. Social media has made the World a smaller place, You can Tweet or post on Facebook as soon as something happens and its read on the other side of the world almost as it happens. Perhaps a Tweet is finally proof of the "Butterfly effect"* be it a 21st century one:

*"The phrase refers to the idea that a butterfly's wings might create tiny changes in the atmosphere that may ultimately alter the path of a tornado or delay, accelerate or even prevent the occurrence of a tornado in another location. The flapping wing represents a small change in the initial condition of the system, which causes a chain of events leading to large-scale alterations of events"

This effect was most recently seen in the Middle east where dictators have been overthrown and people liberated.

So maybe in the next 10 years the flapping of those tiny wings will bring peace and stability again to this world,

Lets all hope so.

Its been a while since I posted a blog entry, Well it has been busy so its not all bad. So what have we been doing ? Well I have to confess that yes I did queue up on launch day for the iPad2, and yes it was sad but it is such a great tool I don't regret it on bit. This entry is typed on it using the Apple BlueTooth keyboard. It a rare thing for me to get out a laptop now.

On a personal level I have finally finished my 1990's Vintage Campag equipped Look Road Bike, So will be doing more cycling over the Summer trying get get fit.

Business wise we have been very busy, Recent projects have been the type we like to get our teeth into, That is different and interesting. One project has been the roll out of a platform that allows Chauffeurs to call their office using their own mobile at no cost to themselves. This was based on Asterisk, using our callback API. Asternic's Stats package and Gradwell VoIP trunks. We have are now rolling out the next part of the system which will mean that you as a customer will be able to call in and if your mobile is recorded on the booking, you will automatically be told where and when you will be able to pick up car.

We have also been working with another customer on a rather complicated CTI integration. What has made it complicated is that the software, A restaurant booking system is a "Closed"  ActiveX with no CTI options. We have provided a CTI "popup" that tells the agent the Restaurant the callers want and provides caller Details as well as links to open the Correct restaurant and also a link to open a Google Sites portal for that Restaurant, as well as logging all the data to a Mysql database.

On the negative side, It seems that Voip hacking is on the increase we are seeing more and more IP addresses being banned in our servers log files. We will shortly be posting a list of rogue IP addresses shortly, But it seems that they are getting more cunning, we have recently seen an increase of the exploit of Trixbox systems that have the wwwadmin password left as default. The hackers are cunning, The don't 'hammer' the system, they are using a Bot to find servers that are exploitable then a couple of days later they come back and get the user and password of an  extension as well as add a route to get out.  Then they start making calls, Not loads of calls so as to raise suspicion, But enough to wipe out your credit.

Well its been a while since ive had time to write anything here. So what have we been upto? Well System installs include a new server for a London based media company, This is the second system/ 3rd server they have, It was for their new office in Chiswick networked back to the head office via leased line and Iax.

Another system was for a UK public sector Hosting and It company for their new datacenter, This was their second redundant system. System redundancy was handled with the use of Heartbeat drbd and scripted use of rsync. Again the system was networked over their 100Meg leased line to the West country based HQ.

We have also been working various small projects including CTI intergration of Opentable Resturant booking so that a customer can provide a booking service for Opentable customers. This has also allowed them to offer a booking service for non opentable customers as the CTI is mysql driven so that callers can be identified by the number they dialed or the number they have dialed from.

A recent mind taxing small project was the out of hours call system for a Japanese Office that was hosted of a UK system. This meant handling the timing and call logic based on Japanese time and not UK time, Which would have been simple if they followed Summer and fall time which they dont so we had to convert the current time to JST and then check if it matched. But once done it works well.

Hosted Platform PDF Print
May 18, 2010 at 05:08 PM

We have been rolling out our new Managed hosted PBX platform with great success. We are being different from many other platform suppliers in a such as we are offering customers their own Mini PBX and manage it adding bespoke features as required.

What We mean by this is that we do not limit what suppliers they connect to or receive calls from, We are a Gradwell Partner so by default we supply calling minutes and incoming numbers from them, but We have for example customers using Skypes SIP trunks for calling and other suppliers as well.

Custom features include besoke hardware to interface with door entry and video equipment, CTI middleware for CRM packages and webdav for call recordings and saving recorings in mp3 or other formats

We also integrate it with Asternics FOP2 Console so  that users can also have an operators panel from the Hosted platform, allowing them to see the status of their users spread over many site. We also have provided CTI integration that is platform independent allowing screen popping on MACs, Linux and Windows PCs.

The Aim is to give an independent Hosted Solution.

We have also launched our backup platform in the USA if a problem occurs in the UK the Aastra handsets will register and use the US server for their calls.

Oh and Finally when you outgrow your hosted solution we can migrate the confuration to your own onsite platform or a mixture of the two which we have already done for one customer.
